Three ways you can register to vote or update information on your registration

By Mail or In-Person
Download and print a registration form, and mail or hand-deliver it to the Forsyth County Board of Elections. in English / en Espanol
A photo ID is needed to vote during Early Voting, on Election Day, and voting by mail.

By Mail / In-Person

Mail or hand-deliver the voter registration form to Forsyth County Board of Elections, 201 N. Chestnut Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Complete all information, including your phone number or email address so that the Board of Elections can contact you if there are questions about your form.

Same-Day Registration
You can register to vote and vote during Early Voting at an Early Voting location. You can change your address, but not your party affiliation. You will need to bring identification verifying your name and address. Any of the following documents with your name and current address are acceptable:

North Carolina driver’s license.

Other photo identification issued by a government agency. Any government-issued photo ID is acceptable, provided that the card includes the voter’s current name and address.

A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing the voter’s name and address.

A current college/university photo identification card paired with proof of campus habitation. For additional guidance on acceptable proof of residence for college students, visit Registering as a College Student.

What if I need a ride to vote or to the Board of Elections to get a photo ID?

Once I've received my mail-in ballot, what are the next steps?

Once you receive your ballot, fill it out in the presence of two witnesses or a notary public. (They don't see how you vote, only that you complete the ballot).

Sign the ballot envelope and have the witnesses sign.

Insert a photocopy of your photo ID in the designated place.

If returning ballot by mail, take to a post office and have the envelope stamped with the date and add correct postage.

Hand-deliver options: take to the FC Board of Elections, 201 N. Chestnut Street, on or before Election Day or to an Early Voting location during Early Voting. Mail-in ballots cannot be turned in at a polling place on Election Day.

Be aware of the deadline for the mail-in ballot to be received by the Board of Elections in order for your vote to count! Ballots must be received by the Forsyth County Board of Elections by 7:30pm on Election Day regardless of when they were postmarked.
